ArtReach

The ArtReach program extends the resources of the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Corcoran College of Art + Design to underserved communities in Washington, D.C. through free high-quality arts education programs. Using the Gallery’s collections as a primary resource. ArtReach makes a special effort to foster the creativity and visual literacy skills of individuals while helping them develop meaningful connections between art and their lives.

As an Artreach faculty member, I taught high-quality, community based visual art classes for children aged 8-18 years old at THEARC: Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus in Washington DC. Here are some successful projects that my students worked on during my time teaching at there.

Washington Color School

The artworks below were inspired by the art of Alma Thomas and Helen Frankenthaler in the Corcoran’s Exhibit, “Washington Color and Light” in the Fall of 2010. They were exhibited inExpressions 2011, at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the annual exhibit for the former ArtReach program.

Sound Suits, 2012

These suits are inspired by the work of Nick Cave that was exhibited in the 30 Americans exhibit at the Corcoran Museum in 2012. Students wore the suits in the programs 20th anniversary celebration and exhibit, Expressions 2012 : Art by DC Youth.

Glitter Portraits

A portrait project inspired by the art of Mickalene Thomas that was exhibited in the 30 Americans exhibit at the Corcoran Museum in 2012. The grew to encompass the parents of my students, members of the staff at THEARC, and students, teachers, and museum staff at the Corcoran School of Art. The finished works were displayed, filling an entire museum wall, at the 20th anniversary celebration and exhibit, Expressions 2012 : Art by DC Youth.
